Lara Schäfer Dual study student

What inspired you to pursue a dual study program in tourism management?

Since I have enjoyed traveling and discovering new countries and cultures ever since my school days, online research revealed that this degree program would allow me to turn my passion into a career. The dual study program also offers me the opportunity to gain practical experience, which should make it easier for me to enter the workforce.

What topics from university do you find particularly exciting?

One of my recent courses was "Actors in the Tourism Industry," which I found very exciting because I hadn't realized before how many players there are in this market. It was particularly interesting to learn about organizations committed to sustainable and fair tourism and finding solutions to existing problems. Furthermore, I always enjoy our English courses because I really like using the English language in everyday life.

What was the most curious or funniest moment you have experienced at work so far?

Since Hotelcamp Reinsehlen is located right in the middle of nature, it's inevitable that you encounter all kinds of animals here. For instance, rabbits have hidden several times in the tall grass on the terrace, often causing a stir and delighting the guests. When I was in the service department and experienced this for the first time, I couldn't help but smile. That's definitely something that isn't common practice in other workplaces.

What would a perfect workday look like for you?

Nothing is perfect, but what makes a workday particularly nice for me is when I'm warmly greeted right in the morning, perhaps meet guests walking around with a smile, or can exchange a few words with my favorite colleagues.

What tip would you give to someone wanting to enter your professional field?

Very clearly: Be open. Tourism is primarily about people, and they can sometimes seem complicated and might make your life difficult. But if you just approach every situation openly, try to understand people, and don't take everything to heart, you can master any situation and find joy in these professions.

Which tasks do you enjoy doing, and which ones not so much?

Through my studies, I have the opportunity to get a taste of literally every department in the company. As a result, I get to know many different task areas. And of course, there are things I prefer doing over others. What I particularly enjoy is working in service—the direct contact with people and the constant movement are great. On the other hand, I find tasks in housekeeping very physically demanding and take my hat off to anyone working in that area.

How do you handle shift work?

By constantly switching departments, I have already experienced many different working hours. Especially in service, you sometimes work into the evening and night, but that has never bothered me. I think every working schedule has its pros and cons. You always have to manage your remaining time alongside work, whether you have an early, mid, or evening/night shift. Especially when you are young and perhaps live alone, irregular working hours are manageable.

What do you like to do most in your free time?

In addition to work and studies, my dog takes up a lot of my time. We love going for walks together. Furthermore, my family lives a bit further away, so I try to drive to the Baltic Sea to visit my family as often as I can.

How do you deal with stressful situations? Are there specific strategies that help you?

Communication: As an accommodation service provider or generally in this industry, it is important to understand that the company is an organism and isn't managed by just one person alone. That means when there's a problem, talk about it and get help—two heads think better than one. That way, stressful situations can usually be resolved super quickly because they might not have been that stressful after all.
